TRAVEL ITINERARY
We will start this trip through the south of Morocco in the stunning city of Marrakech. As the group arrives, we will meet at the hotel and you will have the rest of the day free to explore the red city on your own or with the tour group. We will all meet for dinner and begin our group tour. Our great adventure in Morocco begins!
Meals included: Dinner.
Accommodation: Amani Hotel Suites & Spa or similar.
In the morning we will have breakfast at the hotel and then we will head towards the south of the country in our private bus. On the way we will go around the western side of the High Atlas Mountains and enjoy spectacular scenery as we head into the south of Morocco. We will pass through Agadir and arrive at a small village called Sidi Bibi, famous for the preparation of the best tagines in the region. We will check its fame by having a delicious tagine for lunch and then we will start our visit to the Souss-Massa National Park. We will do a guided tour in 4×4 crossing two reserves of fauna and flora. In the first one we will be able to see gazelles, addax antelopes and ostriches, in the second reserve we will also observe oryx antelopes. During the visit we will make stops to receive explanations from the guide, take pictures and observe nature.
At the end of the tour we will visit the small fishing village of Tifnit. Traditional fishing in small boats is still practiced there and the village has an important market that supplies the whole area with fish and seafood. After visiting the village and relaxing for a while we will start our journey to another coastal village where we will spend the night called Sidi R’bat. We will finish our day by having dinner at the hotel.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Accommodation: La Dune Guesthouse.
After breakfast at the hotel we will meet the women who make up the women’s association of the village. We will start the day with an introduction to the Amazigh culture (known by foreigners as Berber) and the life of the women of the village. They are dedicated to the elaboration of handmade textile products such as handbags with patterns and drawings of the local nature.
At the end of this introduction to the local culture we will go to the beach with the women, where they will teach us how to collect seafood directly from the rocks on the shore, with which we will later prepare lunch for the day. We will walk along the beach and enjoy the beautiful views, peace and tranquility.
Afterwards we will do a collective cooking session with the collected ingredients and enjoy lunch with the local people. After lunch we will visit the peculiar fishermen’s cave houses. These are old houses dug into the cliffs, handmade generations ago. The fishermen live in them, located next to the shore, many of them fish daily for their own consumption and for sale. We will visit the houses and meet the fishermen to talk about their quiet lifestyle, as we always do while sharing a cup of tea. We will enjoy the rest of the evening on the beach and also do a music session. After all of the day’s activities we will have dinner and head to the hotel to get some rest.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Accommodation: La Dune Guesthouse.
After breakfast at the hotel we will say goodbye to Sidi R’bat and our local friends to continue our trip to Belfaa. There we will visit the largest souk in the region, where we will see how families from the surrounding area come to buy and sell livestock, vegetables, fruits, meats, clothes, tools and a myriad of other products. We will have a second breakfast in the nomad tents that are set up for the market every Sunday, a huge canvas that is supported with logs and where we can see live the process of kneading and baking bread, which is served with olive oil, honey and argan oil.
After the visit to the souk we will say goodbye to the coast and we will go into the Anti Atlas, we will go to the small Amazigh village of Ait Milk. There we will visit the house of Ali Faiq, a famous Amazigh musician who wants to show young people the traditional music and its importance in the region and its culture. We will visit his old family home, now restored and converted into a meeting place for music and art lovers. We will meet several local musicians, have lunch with them and spend the afternoon between music and conversation, always with freshly brewed tea in hand. At the end of the afternoon, we will go to our accommodation, the Kerdous Hotel, located in the middle of the mountains with spectacular views, where we will have dinner and go to rest.
Meals included: Breakfast, snack, lunch and dinner.
Accommodation: Hotel Kerdous.
We will start the day with a delicious breakfast at the hotel, then we will head to another small village of the Anti Atlas called Albid. There we will be greeted by Mohamed, our host, who will welcome us with hot tea and some typical sweets. Afterwards, we will take a short walk through the village to visit the traditional Amazigh houses and learn about the way of life of previous generations. In particular we will visit the old house of Mohamed’s family. He is a jeweler and is dedicated to the crafting of beautiful traditional Amazigh jewelry. After visiting his house we will visit his workshop, where he works with his young apprentices to create his beautiful jewelry. He will explain the meaning and uses of the different pieces, as well as the techniques used for their elaboration.
Finally, we will have lunch at Mohamed’s house all together and we will say goodbye to this beautiful region of the Anti Atlas to head to Tafraout. On our way, we will visit Les Roches Peintes, huge granite rocks painted in bright colors in the middle of the desert that form a spectacular landscape. We will finish the day arriving at the hotel in Tafraout and having dinner.
Meals included: Breakfast, snack, lunch and dinner.
Accommodation: Hotel Salama or similar.
After breakfast at the hotel we will start a full day excursion in the Issy Valley. The majestic gorges of the valley are characterized by an impressive contrast between its arid mountains where very little vegetation grows and the palm grove of the valley where the water flows through channels creating an orchard of vegetation in which we find birds, amphibians and even fish. The ruins of abandoned villages decorate the landscape camouflaging because they were built with the same stone of the mountain. Undoubtedly the meaning of the word oasis is understood in this wonderful place.
We will start the route entering the small village of Aït Mansour, then we will continue walking along the slopes of the mountains and enjoying the spectacular views. Then we will descend to the palm grove and walk through the vegetation until we reach an inn where we will rest and replenish our energy with a fantastic lunch. After lunch we will continue to Gdourt, a centuries-old village that has been partially abandoned where we can see ancient houses that still retain their old decorations. At the end of the route we will return to Tafraout, where we will have dinner and finish our day.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Accommodation: Hotel Salama or similar.
We will load up on energy for our adventurous day with a delicious breakfast at our hotel after which we will pack our gear and head for the village of Tagchid, situated at 1420 meters (4658 ft) of altitude. Our adventure today will be the ascension of the Djbel Lkest mountain range, the backbone of the western Anti Atlas. We will summit the Afa-n-Tmezgadiwine peak, situated at 2375 meters (7791 ft) of altitude. Embarking on the journey to the Afa-n-Tmezgadiwine summit, we will be greeted by a captivating landscape. The trail winds through rugged valleys, where ancient rock formations rise majestically. The air becomes crisp and invigorating, and the surrounding scenery becomes more dramatic with each step.
Ascending Afa-n-Tmezgadiwine demands physical strength, agility, and a spirit of perseverance. We will navigate steep inclines, scramble over boulders, and traverse narrow ridges, all while being rewarded with breathtaking vistas of the pink granite Ammelne valley. Along the way, encounters with unique flora and fauna add an element of wonder to the adventure. When we reach the summit we will have our lunch by the ancient refuges and enjoy the spectacular scenery. The ascension will take around four hours and the way back another three. By the end of the adventure we will go back to the hotel to rest and have dinner.
Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Accommodation: Hotel Salama or similar.
We will start the day having breakfast at our hotel, this day will be dedicated to visit the Ammelne valley, where the city of Tafraout is located. In the morning we will go to a small village called Oumessnat, there we will visit a traditional Amazigh house with several generations of history that has now become a museum. Moustapha, the heir of the house and in charge of maintaining it, will show it to us. After the visit, we will have some tea and pastries and enjoy live Amazigh music performed by Moustapha. After the visit, we will walk along a path through the ruins of the ancient villages of the area, where some families still live, and learn about their way of life.
We will return to Tafraout for lunch at a local restaurant and tour the souk of the town, with time to explore and shop. WEATHER CONDITIONS IN THE SOUTH OF MOROCCO
On our trip to Morocco we will visit the Souss-Massa region, in the south of the country. In the coastal regions we will find pleasant temperatures throughout the year, being the highest temperatures in the summer months. In the Anti Atlas mountain range, however, being an inland area, the temperature changes between day and night are very strong, as well as between the different months of the year. Therefore, we recommend to dress warmly for the winter months and light clothing for the months closer to summer.
Rainfall in this area is almost non-existent. UV radiation is intense so sunscreen is recommended.
NECESSARY EQUIPMENT FOR YOUR TRIP TO MOROCCO
For this trip to the south of Morocco you will mainly need:
- Comfortable clothes that cover knees and shoulders.
- Some warm clothes for the mornings and evenings.
- Footwear suitable for uneven roads and trails.
- Sunscreen.
- Flashlight.
- Small backpack for daily excursions.
- Bathing clothes for the Hammam.
In the downloadable guide below you will find all the detailed information on what you will need for the trip.
DIFFICULTY AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The level of physical demand of this trip is medium, since two days are dedicated to hiking. The first one, in Aït Mansour, will be a very easy trail, with very little elevation gain, focused on enjoying the scenery of the valley. The second, the ascent to Afa-n-Tmezgadiwine, will require a little more effort and physical fitness, as the trail has 955 meters of positive and negative slope and sections of rocky path. We will go at a pace adapted to the group and if any traveler prefers to stay in Tafraout resting or doing another activity (not included in the price), he/she will also have the option.
This is a highly immersive cultural trip, so we will be in direct contact with the local people and their way of life. It is important to keep an open and respectful mind.
